At Wilderness Expertise, we’ve seen first-hand how the Duke of Edinburgh (DofE) Award shapes young people into well-rounded individuals. One of the most essential skills it fosters is communication. Whether participants are tackling their physical challenge, volunteering in the community, or embarking on their adventurous journey, communication is at the heart of every aspect of the award.
Teamwork in the Outdoors
One of the most significant components of the DofE Award is the expedition. Young participants must work together to navigate challenging terrain, set up camp, and manage limited resources. Effective communication is essential for the group to work as a cohesive unit, from deciding on the best route to sharing out tasks like cooking and pitching tents. This requires not only clear expression but also active listening and an awareness of each team member’s strengths.
At Wilderness Expertise, we facilitate this teamwork, providing the environment and support for participants to practise and refine these skills. By communicating effectively in real-world settings, they learn how to navigate group dynamics and resolve conflicts—crucial skills that will serve them well beyond the award.
Problem-Solving through Dialogue
Throughout the DofE Award, challenges are inevitable. Whether it’s dealing with bad weather, broken equipment, or group disagreements, participants must communicate clearly and effectively to find solutions. Our role at Wilderness Expertise is to guide them through these moments, helping them stay calm under pressure and encouraging open dialogue to solve problems.
These experiences not only help them complete their award but also prepare them for future situations where communication will be critical, whether in school, work, or personal life.
Developing Empathy and Understanding
Another key part of the DofE Award is volunteering, which often involves interacting with people from diverse backgrounds. Participants need to learn to communicate across age groups, cultures, and social settings. At Wilderness Expertise, we believe these interactions are crucial in developing empathy and open-mindedness. Through our programmes, young people learn to adapt their communication style to suit different audiences, be it a peer, a younger child they’re mentoring, or an older community member.
Our Role in Facilitating Communication
As facilitators, Wilderness Expertise is committed to ensuring participants make the most of the DofE experience, particularly when it comes to communication. Our experienced guides help create an environment where young people feel supported in expressing themselves and working together as a team. We provide tailored outdoor experiences that are not only safe and challenging but also focused on developing key communication skills in high-pressure, unfamiliar environments.
With our support, participants learn the importance of clear, confident communication, whether they’re planning their expedition route, resolving conflicts within the group, or communicating with local communities during their volunteering efforts.
A Lifelong Skill
Ultimately, the Duke of Edinburgh Award equips young people with communication skills that last a lifetime, and Wilderness Expertise is proud to play a part in that journey. The confidence, empathy, and adaptability they develop through our outdoor programmes prepare them for success in all areas of life.
In today’s fast-paced, interconnected world, the ability to communicate clearly and effectively is invaluable. Through team collaboration, problem-solving, and community engagement, the DofE Award—supported by Wilderness Expertise—helps shape young people into effective communicators and empathetic individuals ready to make a positive impact.
