Last week marked a highlight in the Wilderness Expertise calendar: our annual leader training conference. This is a cherished opportunity for our team—both in-house staff and our dedicated freelance leaders—to come together, reflect on the past year, and strategise for an even better future.
However, this year’s conference tested our resilience right from the start. Upon arrival, we found our venue flooded after days of torrential rain. Wellies became our most valuable accessory as we adapted to challenging conditions. Cooking was relocated to a flooded kitchen, and lunch was served ingeniously from the back of a Land Rover. While far from ideal, the situation became a testament to the adaptability and resourcefulness that defines our team.
A significant focus of the conference was safeguarding—an essential element of everything we do. We revisited current legislation and discussed how we can continue to provide robust support for young people during their expeditions. Through practical scenarios and collaborative workshops, we shared best practices, ensuring every team member is equipped to handle a range of situations with professionalism and care.
Reflecting on the year, we were proud to report very few incidents across our expeditions. This outcome highlights the effectiveness of regular training in equipping our leaders with the skills and confidence needed to manage challenges proactively.
The conference also included a session led by a team member with extensive experience working in schools. This insight deepened our understanding of the unique challenges educators face and how we can better align our support with their needs. This perspective is invaluable in shaping how we work with schools, ensuring we remain a trusted and flexible partner.
Despite the soggy start, this year’s conference reinforced why we do what we do. It was a powerful reminder of our shared commitment to delivering exceptional experiences for young people and of the importance of continual learning and adaptation.
Here’s to another year of growth, resilience, and making a difference—rain or shine!
